New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a potential 2024 candidate, tried today to shed the moderate label he’s earned while taking a swipe at another prominent likely 2024 Republican — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“I’m No. 1 in personal freedoms. Sorry, Ron, you’re No. 2,” he added, a jab at DeSantis, who is considered a frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
The libertarian-leaning Cato Institute ranked Sununu the second-most fiscally conservative U.S. governor, behind Iowa’s GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds. DeSantis was ranked 20th, behind some Democrats.
Sununu is a stinging Trump critic who once called the former president “fucking crazy.” While he’s more moderate on social issues (ex. the Republican typically describes himself as pro-choice), he’s positioning himself as a Trump alternative who still carries the conservative mantle.
